USC Environmental Student Assembly, USC Speakers Committee, and USC Schwarzenegger Institute are pleased to welcome the Governator as he speaks about the importance of environmental action on USC’s campus. Along with his long list of accomplishments – from winning Mr. Universe to gaining worldwide fame through box office hits such as Total Recall, Conan the Barbarian, and The Terminator Franchise – Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has served two terms as the 38th Governor of California from 2003 to 2011. During his time in office, he worked to improve California’s budget, promote new business, and protect the environment.

Arnold Schwarzenegger made huge strides to address issues of the environment during his time in office by signing a bill for the nation’s first cap on greenhouse gas emissions in 2006. Through the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, he also signed a second bill that prohibits large utilities and corporations in California from making long-term contracts with suppliers who don’t meet the state’s greenhouse gas emission standards. In 2009, Governor Schwarzenegger led states, automakers, and the federal government reached an agreement to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from passenger vehicles, which will lead to a new national standard by 2016. He has also created various conservation areas for oceans and rivers to reduce pollution and increase research and resource protection. He has shown personal commitment to the environment by installing solar panels in his home and adapting his Hummers to run on hydrogen and biofuels.

In 2009, Arnold was awarded the Bruce F. Vento Public Service Award by the National Park Trust for his leadership and innovation in the protection of public lands in California and for his life-long commitment to children’s health and to connecting them with the outdoors. USC Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy was founded under the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy to advance post-partisanship in finding solutions to the serious challenges we face today. In 2011, he founded the R20: Regions of Climate Action to help sub-national governments implement low-carbon and climate-resilient projects for renewable energy and energy efficiency. He’s back… at USC to share his thoughts on the importance of environmental action on campus.
